Invitation for the International Speleological Expedition
ISAN - Thailand, March 16 - March 24, 2017

In the Northeast of Thailand (so called Isan), there is a huge sandstone plateau composed mostly of quartz, a landscape almost unique in SE Asia. On this plateau there are dozens of caves, many still waiting to be discovered and explored. It is the purpose of our expedition, the exploring and doing the topography of the underground cavities of various sizes, generally without too many technical difficulties. There will also be visited several national parks such as the parks Pha Taen and Mukdahan with strange shapes of erosion and corrosion, plus the unique gorge of the Mekong River, located between Thailand and Laos, where the great river has a width of only 80 m.

Program:

March 16, 2017- 19:00, meeting of participants in Mochit bus station from Bangkok. 20:00: Travel by bus to Nomp Phue (Khemmarat direct ion).
March 17, 2017- 5:00, arrival in Nomp Phue in the morning. Participants will receive, upon request all the necessary information, equipment etc. Overnight in Ban Kham Mae Mui. After lunch, a visit to Wat Phou, a natural reservation with karst and pseudo-karst in quartz sandstones. 18:30: welcome dinner.
March 18, 2017, 6:30, traveling to Sam Pan Bok, the impressive gorge in quartz sandstones of the Mekong River, on the border between Thailand and Laos. Sailing on the Mekong with the canoe motor and surveying 7-8 small and medium caves in quartz sandstone of the canyon. On return, will go on the visit and the exploration in Tham Nam Lot, the third largest cave in quartz sandstones in Thailand, 181 m long.
March 19, 2017- 7.30, visit of the famous natural park on the banks of the Mekong, Pha Taem, where a large cave shelter (abri) is the most interesting cave with wall paintings from throughout SE Asia. At return, visit of the largest quartz sandstone caves in Thailand Tham Patihan, 776 m long.
March 20, 2017 - 14:00, visit of Wat Tham in neighboring of Nomp Phu, mapping the cave shelters (abri) in the temple area.
March 21, 2017- 7:30, travel to the Mukdahan National Park and surveying the largest abri in the quartz sandstone caves in Thailand. On the way back, visiting the water active cave Tham Phung.
March 22, 2017- 14:00, travel to the temple Tham Pang in the neighboring province Amnat Charoen and surveying the three cavities in quartz sandstones. 18.30: dinner for ending the expedition.
March 23, 2017- 9:00, exploring an active cave in Ban Kham Mae Mui. 17.20: back to Nomp Pue. 18:30: Evening in the quick bus to Bangkok.
March 24, 2017- 5:00, morning, arrival in Bangkok.

The definitive program of exploration will be decided on the spot but, depending on the discoveries.
